10 internet technologies that educators should be informed about

April 29, 2009 - No Responses

There are so many different tools and technologies available on the internet today, and so many associated terms and concepts. As I think about topics to focus on in the coming months, I want to make sure we’re touching on the most important ones. What are the most important internet technologies for educators to be aware of, and informed about? I’m sure many people would probably come up with a slightly different list, but based on my observations and experiences, and feedback from faculty at my institution, I have selected the following technologies. I do not mean to imply that every educator should be expected to use all of these technologies in the classroom, but rather that every educator should understand what these are, the potential they have in the classroom, and how their students may already be using them.

1. Video and Podcasting – One of the most widely adopted internet technologies for use in instructional settings is video streaming. Between YouTubeTeacherTubeEduTube, and …

Hello world!

I have been blogging about Emerging Internet Technologies for Education for some time now at www.EmergingEdTech.com, and I want keep spreading the word, sharing these great tools, and seeking feedback and dialogue. I hope you’ll be encouraged to come on by and check out any posted topics of interest.

EmergingEdTech.com focuses on learning about and using current and emerging internet technologies in educational and instructional applications. On a weekly basis, I research one of the (mostly free or low cost!) web based technologies being used in classrooms and other academic settings, or to support educational activities or distance learning outside of the classroom. I often break these postings into short series, to allow for further investigation of an interesting area or product, without expecting the reader to find the time to digest lots of long posts (mine are consistently kept to just a page or two). I also post a brief mid week update to provide further insight into the current topic, or to provide a little insight into some other relevant topic.

My qualifications
I have been in the information technology field for over 20 years, working at a senior management level for more than half of that time. I have been an avid user of Internet technologies for many of those years, and last year I began working for an institution of higher education, where I focused increasing attention on instructional uses of current and emerging Internet technologies. There is so much that can be done to engage students with these evolving technologies. I also feel strongly that educators should strive to be aware of these technologies, and to provide students with insight into them. Please note that I do not claim to be an expert in these technologies – I am, probably much like yourself, very interested in them, and willing to devote some time to exploring them and sharing my experiences in a way that I hope is useful. I really hope to encourage a dialogue - to hear back from readers who have used these and similar technologies and can share their experiences, perspective, and knowledge.
